Rematch: Christian ‘Coqqos’ Schembri vs Elton Azzopardi 2
With the Maltese Middleweight title still up for grabs, Christian ‘Coqqos’ Schembri and Elton Azzopardi once again come face to face to determine who will be the national champion. Set for June 3rd at the Hilton Hotel in Portomasso and staged by Gladiator Promotions, this promises to be another eventful encounter.
Back in February of this year, we saw Schembri and Azzopardi contest the vacant Maltese Middleweight title, which was attended by a sell-out crowd and broadcast live on Fightzone to a global audience. The bout ended in a draw with the three judges scoring it 96-95 in favour of Schembri; 97-94 in favour of Azzopardi; and the third judge scoring it 95-95 even.
With no clear winner, talk of a rematch was immediately mentioned by both fighters during the post-fight interviews.
Schembri, a boxer who has fought abroad; contested international titles; and has many more bouts to his name; will go into this fight as the favourite. He has this to say:
“I’m looking forward to the rematch. Last time out, it was a close fight between both of us, and it could have gone either way. I’m sure that he will come even more prepared for the rematch, but I worked very hard, and I’m more than confident of winning in clear fashion.”
He continued, “Preparation has been great. I did a short seven-day training camp in Leeds with a renowned coach in the area Keith Lawton. Sparring Middleweight Ishmael ‘BP’ Davis and Light Heavyweight Jack Bagnall was hard as I had to stay switched on and push the pace all the time, but it’s a great way to prepare for my fight.”
Marc James, the president of the Malta Boxing Association – who will be sanctioning the event, commented: “The last fight between Coqqos and Azzopardi was a gripping display of skill and determination. Both fighters showcased their exceptional talent, delivering an intense and memorable bout. It was a true testament to their dedication to the sport.
“As for the upcoming fight, I believe it has all the ingredients for an incredible showdown. Both Coqqos and Azzopardi have shown tremendous progress and growth in their careers, and their previous encounter has undoubtedly fueled their desire for victory. I expect an intense and closely contested match that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final bell.”
With two hungry fighters determined to become the national champion, this is definitely a fight that boxing fans will want to attend. Should you wish to buy tickets to the event, then you can do so at the following number: +356 7931 1928
